Vipassana Hawai'i has simple roots in weekly sittings in the living room of Founding Teachers, Steven Smith and Michele McDonald. Their vision and teaching lineage is inspired by the late venerable Mahasi Sayadaw of Burma, and his senior students, Sayadaw U Pandita, Sayadaw U Lakkhana- both of whom are named as the primary spiritual friends and guides (kalyanamitta) to Vipassana Hawai'i
