Sayadaw U Lakkhana

U Lakkhana_school opening copy

Friends, we are very sad to let you all know that Sayadaw U Lakkhana passed away on June 4, 2014 at 1:30pm local time in his room at Kyaswa Monastery in Myanmar. We will all miss him dearly. The village of Wachet will miss him dearly, as will many people around the world. He offered a uniquely powerful voice of Dhamma rooted in kindness and compassion. His offerings to the world were many and great. We are profoundly grateful to him and will continue to honor and support his good works in Wachet and beyond in every way that we can.

Welcome!

The Buddha taught: “ehi passiko”- come and see for yourself. Vipassana Hawai‘i offers ways for people of all ages to do just that: To see for ourselves that there is no limit to the wisdom and kindness we can cultivate and use to nurture each other and the planet toward what is good.

Vipassana Hawaiʻi is a 501(c)(3) non-profit established in Hawaiʻi in 1984. Our teachers have worked in the US and internationally with established and respected meditation centers since 1975, including in Thailand and Burma, where they are affiliated with several ancient Buddhist monasteries and provide long-term humanitarian aid.

The land owned by Vipassana Hawai‘i includes open, green farm lands giving way to stream beds opening to narrow bays, home to monk seals, crashing waves and ancient sites. Rolling pastures, salty winds and shoreline cliffs bear witness to the vastness of the Pacific, the spaciousness of wild nature over centuries. Amid this profound beauty, people find entry points to timeless kindness, wisdom, and ease – an invitation to practice mindfulness connected with the earth. This is Hālawa, 254 acres, North Kohala, Hawai‘i Island, the current home of Vipassana Hawai‘i.

Our programs are varied, always aligned with Buddhist Theravada teachings, and currently available in Hawai‘i, the mainland, Canada, and Southeast Asia. Whether you are a beginner or an seasoned yogi, we provide a diverse range of practice opportunities throughout the year.
